If you’ve decided to use sod for your lawn, it’s important that you find the type that best fits your lawn’s properties. The following is a list of parameters you must consider before selecting your sod:
1. Climatic Conditions
The type of weather in your locality determines the best choice of grass. Different species of grass have strengths as weaknesses regarding certain climates. Take Kentucky Bluegrass as an example, this grass has a strong resistance to the cold and will thrive in cooler environments. Sod can be installed any time of year but keep your local climate in mind when selecting the species you want.
2. Soil Characteristics
Pay attention to the type of soil you’re installing sod into. Each type of grass has preferences when it comes to soil composition. A good way to test compatibility is through a pH level test. For example, Manila Grass prefers soil with a pH level between 5.8 and 7.0.
3. Shade Tolerance
Is your lawn completely exposed or covered with shade? Look into the shade tolerance of each grass type you can put into your lawn. Some species of grass can’t survive in lowlight conditions, so be sure the one you select can if your lawn is shaded. St. Augustine Grass, for example, survives easily in lowlight conditions.
4. Irrigation System
Before you invest in a better-looking lawn, consider your irrigation method first. Is your hose long enough to reach every corner of your lawn? Do you have underground sprinklers? Make sure your irrigation method is effective before placing sod. Another thing to consider is the hydration needs of the grass you’re looking for. Each variety of grass has different hydration needs and limits.
